Simke Restaurierung offers services in conservation of archa­eological objects, installation of exhibitions, and scientific research for private and institutional customers.
Conservation is a combination of history, art and science, thus making it a fascinating profession. Ronald Simke says:
Archaeological objects do have a condition but not a damage. It implies, that destruc­tive influences on an item be­come part of it’s history and that’s is the real treasure of it.

“Points of Interest – East Berlin” is a collaboration of free 3D artists and photo­graphers, creating digital models for an inter­active, web based city map of Berlin. The group was launched in 2007 by Lester Balz, Marten Suhr and Andreas Naurath (texturing/art direction/supervision) working in commission of the Berlin city govern­ment. Existing models didn’t meet the high quality demands of a real time rendering engine in the web, especially: precision in dimen­sion, (low) polygon count and texture quality. This time, all buildings were shot on-site by photo­graphers and their exact dimen­sions were taken from land registry material. In 2008, I contributed modelling and texturing of “Humboldt University” and “New National Gallery” to the project. (Photography: Susanne Serwe)

RENDERINGS

In November 2005 I started an intern ship at LucasFonts in Berlin, which became a freelance engagement until End 2006. The work com­prised a glyph set exten­sion for TheSans Roman and Italic fonts and the implementation of respective Open­Type features.
In particular, I worked on the figure sys­tem, ligatures, small caps, diacritics, experimental designs for capital ligatures and even Vietnamese accents. Therefore, it was important to find an appropriate balance be­tween new and existing forms.
Besides improving technical skills, I learned a lot about the font production process at LucasFonts, which is a mixture of systematic work, attention to subtle details, and many years of experience. (plus: having a good espresso machine)

The Hotel concept is a fixed band of musicians and visual artists who invite special guests to collaborate in the studio and on stage (singers, musicians, filmmakers).
Visuals parallel sound in symbiosis. Intricate collages and clips are created for every song, including visual and sonic interludes which take the programme well beyond usual VJ flickerings. The video show is produced by LEM Studios – a conglomerate that officially suffers from new media and has been repeatedly awarded with the Animago (European Animation Award).

Music and Visuals

When the band was launched by my friend and colleague Sebastian Purfuerst, I was invited to take part as a visual artist and I was immediately attracted by the interdisciplinary approach of the concept. As the visuals should become an inherent part of every song, this was a great chance to throw in skills and ideas with a graphical arts background and to get in touch with motion media and music production.
The Hotel became a stunning source of inspiration and know­ledge for me. This included collaborative work on live show concepts as well, as giving them life in the production, edi­ting and compositing process. The project required attention to virtually every kind of media.
But in first place, it was all about creating an emotional touching on-stage environment for the songs. The visuals didn’t necessarily had to develop a story in a straight, narra­tive sense. The audience should be given space for own interpretations of words, music and images, which could be a different puzzle for every single show visitor.

In September 2008, I took part in a LEM-Studios Cooperation with Triad, Berlin. Art directed by Sebastian Purfuerst, we produced the content for several media screens for the Spitzke AG booth at the upcoming InnoTrans Trade show in Berlin.
The main intention was to make real life video footage, graphic design elements of the booth and their adoption as motion graphics work together in a seamless way.
The project included the production of an image film, 3 event trailers and a slide show. Editing, compositing and shooting of additional video footage was partially done in HDV quality (image film). Further info and media on the LEM-Studios
