A Movie Picture
This is a special cut of “2001 – A Space Odyssey”. It just happened, when I tried to make mosaics of movie frame icons (frames scaled down to 9 by 5 pixels). I was wondering, if it’s possible to bring a whole movie down to a single picture.
Instead of scaling down, I tried to arrange small portions of the frame, a single line for example. I later learned from my studio colleague Christian Mahler, it’s the basics of something called “slit scanning”.
25 lines (frames) per second was simply too much data. For my experiment, I ended up with 10 fps. It was good enough, to see, what’s happening, without losing the “effect”.
Large parts are quite abstract, but you can still spot people or objects. The sequence is also revealing the editing rhythm and tells something about the color environment of the movie.
